Qigong Movement

December 16 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Qigong Movement

Amy Kiara Ruth and Dr. Navid Mohammadi

This weekly recurring movement class includes Qigong-based breathing techniques and movement sequences as well as guided embodiment explorations to deepen understanding of kinesiology movement principles.

Qigong (or Chi Kung) means energy cultivation, or energy work.

Qigong, like its sister practice, Tai Chi (energy training), is ancient system of movement and intention. These practices support health through a whole body, systemic perspective and offer opportunity to apply the somatic skills of sensory awareness and pacing to supportive movement.

It is my perspective that most cultures either have or had practices of health and well-being that involve breath, movement, intention – it is from this perspective that I share these Qigong movement practices.

These sessions are designed to offer an experience of moving from a place of (relative) ease and calm – modification and alternatives will be provided.

This class is suitable for patients with more complex pain patterns – as we are exploring how to move from a place of relative ease. It is recommended that participants have attended the Somatic Therapy GMV class before this class, but not mandatory. The level of intensity is gentle to moderate, and the intensity can be varied by each participant.

Participants are encouraged to let ease and enjoyment of movement be your guide; you are invited to adapt/modify any of the movements – and/or take pauses for visualizing movement and rest (integration).

As in the Somatic Therapy GMV sessions, we will build a felt-sense of support through ground and space orientation as well as guided embodiment explorations.

Each class will start with a brief check-in, and include some breathing or “seed” movement exercises before moving into a specific Qigong form, and will conclude with a guided meditation.

How to prepare:

Please find a space in your home where you are able to move relatively easily without obstruction from furniture and still see the computer / device.

The movements will be demonstrated in both sitting and standing, so please have a supportive chair available.

All of the movements can be done through visualization from a more reclined position as needed / if preferred.
